This Day In Weather History

In 1920, three tornadoes, two of which were violent F4s and the 3rd an F3, tore through Rogers, Mayes and Cherokee counties in Northeast Oklahoma. The three twisters killed 75, injured 112, and caused around $250,000 damage. Of the three tornadoes, the Cherokee County twister was by far the worst and deadliest, killing 71 and injuring 100. It completely destroyed the small, isolated town of Peggs, located around 40 miles east of Tulsa. && In 2008, an extremely dangerous Tropical Cyclone, Nargis, comparable to a Category 4 hurricane, became the costliest and deadliest named cyclone ever to occur in the North Indian Ocean. The catastrophic cyclone is known to have killed around 138,000 and caused around $12 billion damage. The number of deaths is likely an underestimate as it is believed the Burmese Government stopped counting fatalities so as to minimize political fallout. Hardest hit was Burma, although the vicious cyclone also hit the East Coast of India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh very hard.
