Tornado Warning

Criteria:

	Tornado Warning: Tornadoes sighted or indicated on radar
	Tornado Emergency: In exceedingly rare situations, when a severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage from a tornado is imminent or ongoing.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning

Criteria:

Wind gusts of 58 MPH or greater
...or...
Hail of 1.00" in diameter or greater

Special Weather Statement

Criteria:

	Wind gusts of 40 MPH to 57 MPH ...or... Hail of 0.50" to 0.99" in diameter
	The Special Weather Statement (SPS) can also be used for other types of significant weather, usually when falling below warning or advisory criteria.

Flash Flood Warning

Criteria:

	Flash Flood Warning: Flooding observed or indicated by radar... ...in rapidly changing, short-term situations
	Flash Flood Emergency: In exceedingly rare situations, when a severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage from a flash flood is imminent or ongoing.

Flood Warning

Criteria:

	Flooding observed or indicated by radar... ...in long-term situations
	River flood warnings are issued when forecast crests at are expected to reach/exceed flood stage.

Flood Advisory

Criteria:

Minor flooding observed or indicated by radar...
...such as a few inches of water over roads...
...or small creeks out of their banks, but not affecting structures

Flood Watch

Criteria:

Elevated potential for flooding or flash flooding.
A flash flood watch may be issued for burn scars and potential dam breaks.

Dust Storm Warning

Criteria:

A sudden drop in visibility to a quarter mile or less resulting in widespread or localized blowing dust.

Dust Advisory

Criteria:

A sudden drop in visibility to one mile or less, but greater than a quarter mile, resulting in widespread or localized blowing dust.

Blowing Dust Warning

Criteria:

A long duration event of widespread or localized blowing dust reducing visibilities to a quarter mile or less.

Blowing Dust Advisory

Criteria:

Long-duration event of widespread or localized blowing dust reducing visibilities to one mile or less, but greater than a quarter mile.

High Wind Watch/Warning

Criteria:

	Lower elevations: Wind gusts of 58 mph or greater or sustained winds of 40 mph or greater for one hour.
	Higher elevations: Wind gusts of 75 mph or greater or sustained winds of 50 mph or greater for one hour.
	Issued for non-convective weather

Wind Advisory

Criteria:

	Lower elevations only: Wind gusts of 46 mph to 57 mph ...or... Sustained winds of 31 MPH to 39 MPH for one hour
	Issued for non-convective weather

Dense Fog Advisory

Criteria:

Visibility reduced to a quarter mile or less

Freezing Fog Advisory

Criteria:

Light ice accumulation from freezing fog

Dense Smoke Advisory

Criteria:

Visibilities at or below a quarter mile from smoke.

Ashfall Advisory

Criteria:

Airborne ash plume resulting in ongoing deposition at the surface. Ashfall may originate directly from a volcanic eruption or from the re-suspension (by wind) of a significant amount of relic ash.

Air Stagnation Advisory

Criteria:

Morning and afternoon mixing height of 1,500 ft AGL or less...
...and...
Morning and afternoon transport winds of 10 kts or less...
...and...
Conditions to continue for at least 72 hours...
...and...
Conditions are underway or are expected to start within 24 hours.

Issued for atmospheric conditions stable enough to cause air pollutants to accumulate in a given area.

Criteria:

Used to relay non-routine air quality alert messages issued by state and local agencies. It is only meant to convey the official information from the state and local air quality agencies.
