Overview

Numerous severe thunderstorms developed during the afternoon of June 25 across central Indiana. The storms produced tornadoes, damaging winds, and very large hail up to 4 inches in diameter. One person was killed in a tornado with 1 injured by the same tornado in Martin County.

Summary: The tornado started just west of the Travis Road and Mullinix Road intersection. It moved east and intensified quickly as it produced damage near and around the Travis-Mullinix intersection, including bricks blown off of a large house, roof damage, a trailer moved into an adjacent yard, trees snapped, and a few snapped power poles. In this region, the tornado was estimated mainly as high-end EF1 with winds up to 110 mph. However, spotty low-end EF-2 damage was probable here as well with maximum 115 mph estimated winds. The tornado continued east and went through parts of the Kensington Grove subdivision with substantial roof damage to some homes and some trees downed and snapped. Winds of 95-110 were estimated in this area (EF1). The tornado continued east through the Waters Edge neighborhood and over the pond in that area with winds about 90-100 mph. The tornado continued past the Old Marsh by Rt. 135, and then just east of there hit part of an apartment complex under construction. Here, the roof was torn off the length of one of the buildings in the complex, along with many broken windows and even a few pieces of debris impaled into the ground. Winds of about 115 mph (low-end EF2) were estimated here. The tornado then started to turn southeast and pass over an open field where a narrow debris swath was deposited. In this area, the tornado may have skipped up and down a bit. The tornado then came down and snapped and uprooted numerous trees along W. County Road 600 N. just south of the Restoration Church. More high-end EF1 damage was evident here, estimated at 100-110 mph. Finally, the tornado lifted roughly a quarter or third of a mile southeast of this location with no real further evidence of a tornado.

Summary: Tornado began as an EF0, damaging multiple outbuildings and a barn. Shortly after, multiple trees were observed snapped at the trunk. The tornado kept progressing for a couple of miles, reaching peak intensity (100 MPH - EF1) west of Rockport Rd before damaging a house and a nearby outbuilding. Another house had extensive roof damage along Rockport Rd before the tornado lifted just to the east

Summary: The tornado started just west of Haw Creek Road in southern Martin County producing EF1 damage to a home with destruction of a two car garage and roof ripped off of the home. The tornado continued to move ESE crossing the White River and producing EF1 damage to numerous trees along Jackman Hill Road. The tornado strengthened as it moved SE towards Windom Road where it produced damage consistent with an EF2 to a home along Windom Road between River Road and Ridge Road. Only one exterior wall of the home remained standing with the rest collapsed. Winds associated the tornado are believed to have gotten under the patio decking and lifted the structure as some 2x4s were shown to be sticking vertically upwards. This likely caused the eventual collapse of the structure. One fatality and one injury were reported at this home. The tornado began to turn more to the SE producing widespread tree damage along Blue Creek Lane with multiple trunks snapped and uprooted. The tornado continued SE towards Simmons Creek Road producing widespread tree damage just north of Simmons Creek Road. Damage was reported to a structure north of Simmons Creek Road but we were unable to inspect the damage due to trees blocking roads. At this point the tornado continued ESE but began to weaken as it entered Dubois County where some tree damage in the form of snapped trunks and uprooted trees were observed. The tornado lifted just before N 960 E in Dubois County.
