Overview

Fast Facts:

A potent storm system -- the second in a week's time to cross the nation's mid-section -- brought high winds to a large part of the western to central U.S., as well as a severe thunderstorm wind complex from Kansas through Iowa into Wisconsin.

High winds in northern Illinois and northwest Indiana were not due to thunderstorms, and were as high as 69 mph at Aurora Airport in Sugar Grove, 68 mph in Waukegan, and 66 mph at Chicago (O'Hare) late on the evening of Wednesday, December 15. Most locations gusted between 55 and 65 mph.

There was scattered damage with these winds in the local area, namely in the form of branches or trees downed and powerlines impacted. There were tens of thousands of power outages reported across the region late Wednesday night, December 15.

Temperatures on Wednesday into Wednesday night were anomalously warm into the 60s, breaking record highs at Chicago and Rockford, and even tying the all time December high in Rockford of 69°.

Record Warmth

High temperatures (including records set) for Wednesday, December 15

Chicago O'Hare had a high on December 15 of 66°, breaking the old record for the day of 64° set in 1971. Chicago also broke it's record warm minimum temperature for the calendar day, with a low of only 50°, breaking the old record of 44° from 1928.

Rockford had a high on December 15 of 69°, shattering the old record for the day of 58° set in 1971. This also tied the all-time December warmest temperature in Rockford of 69° set on December 3, 2012. Rockford also broke it's record warm minimum temperature for the calendar day, with a low of only 50°, breaking the old record of 42° from 2014.

For the calendar day of Thursday, December 16, Chicago had a record high temperature of 66° not long after midnight, breaking its record high temperature for the day of 60° set in 1984.

Also for the calendar day of Thursday, December 16, Rockford had a record high temperature of 68°, shattering the old record of 58° set in 1984.
